Jotz Folder
Jotz keeps all of its files in a folder called "Jotz Folder", located at the root level of your Documents folder in your user folder. The Jotz Folder must remain in that location and have that name for Jotz to find it. Recent versions of Jotz let you replace the Jotz folder with an alias to a Jotz folder somewhere else. This is how some Jotz users share their Jotz notes between a desktop Mac and a FireWire Mac laptop -- they keep their Jotz folder on the laptop, and mount the laptop on their desktop using FireWire Disk Mode. This is a wise way of handling this kind of issue, as it eliminates all of the notorious pitfalls of file/folder synchronization. This single location makes several of Jotz's nicer features possible -- multi-Pad searches and hierarchical Pad-note menus among them. Inside the Jotz folder are your Pads, and inside the pads are your Notes. You can create new folders inside the Jotz folder to add a hierarchical organization to your pads. Jotz will automatically regenerate the affected menus. "All Pads" searches will automatically find all Pads in the Jotz folder, no matter how deeply they may be buried in folders. You can open a Finder window on the Jotz folder by using the Open Jotz Folder command from Jotz's File menu. In addition to your Pad and Note files, Jotz also stores some housekeeping files (mostly invisible) , some XML data files and a backup copy of your Preferences in the Jotz folder. If you need to move Jotz to a new computer that has never had Jotz on it, just copy the Documents folder containing the Jotz folder to the new computer and all of your preferences (including your registration serial number) will automatically follow. If the new computer. If you are moving Jotz to a computer that has had someone else's copy of Jotz on it, or an old version of Jotz, you will need to discard the old Jotz Preferences file from the new computer before running Jotz. This file is located at: (your user folder)->Library->Preferences->com.thinkertons.jotz.plist. |
